Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath
through him.

"Much more
then"
These three words set a division between being NOW justified by Christ's blood
and being saved from wrath through Christ. Christians are now reconciled
to God through the blood of Christ, there is pardon given for our
transgressions. There is now atonement for sin where before, there was
none. What a wonderful blessing. The Israelites had to offer blood
sacrifices in complicated religious ceremony to achieve this. This has
been done for us now through the atoning blood of Christ. As wonderful a
blessing as this is, there is something better yet to come.
"we shall
be saved from wrath"
We "shall be saved". This is something
yet to come. The words "shall be" are
looking ahead to a future time and not to something that has already transpired.
The salvation from wrath is in addition to the justification by blood and the
two events are separate happenings as evidenced by the use of the apostles
words. This thought is further reinforced in the verse, (10), that
follows.
The individual who considers oneself to be already saved
from the wrath of God while yet here on earth needs to give pause for careful
consideration. While Christians do have pardon for sin through the blood
of Jesus Christ, there yet remains a salvation from the wrath of God through Jesus
Christ.
If our justification and salvation from God's wrath were
simultaneous events, then why did the inspired apostle pen the following words?
Rom 13:11
And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to
awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
