Understanding of the biblical concept of
sanctification is very important in understanding our
conversion and God's role in it. As an introduction to our
lesson, it's interesting to note that the words most often
translated, “sanctify”, “holy”, and “saints” all come from
the same root word in the Greek which means two separate or
set apart. Let's remember that as we go along today.
1.
Sanctification in the Old Testament.
a.
The idea of being set apart.
b.
The meaning is clearly seen in numbers 8: 14- 16. Levite’s
set apart to the Lord.
c.
God’s people- nation of Israel- exodus 33: 16.
d.
Individuals-Samuel. First Samuel 1: 11.
2.
Sanctification in the New Testament. (Christian age)
a.
Made possible by Christ- Hebrews 10: 10. Add will, more
specifically, his blood-Hebrews 13: 12. Here's sacrifice on
the cross enables one to be holy and blameless- Colossians
1: 20.
b.
All Christians are sanctified. A state into which we are
called- first Corinthians 1: 2.
i.
How are they called? 2 Thessalonians 2: 13-14.
ii.
How and when does this sanctifying take place? First turn
to Ephesians 5: 25- 27. Christians (the church) are
sanctified when cleansed by washing of water by the word.
Now note first Corinthians 6: 9- 11. They were washed,
sanctified and justified at the same time. This washing is
clearly baptism for the remission of sin - (Acts 22: 16 ).
iii.
The Christian arises from waters of baptism a new creation,
set apart for God's use- (Romans 6: 4).
iv.
the Christian separates himself from the world in his
thoughts and behavior-(Romans 6: 19). Our entire lives are
to be used for righteousness because we have been
sanctified- (Romans 12: 1212). Now read second Timothy 2:
19- 21.
3.
Conclusion
Regardless of your past you can be washed, sanctified and
justified if you are willing. Those who have been
sanctified must live a separated life. Our new sanctified
lives should reflect God's character-“be holy, for I am
holy”. Has our conduct been clean? Have we been using our
members for righteousness?
