Jesus and the Psalms
Introduction:
The books of the Old Testament contain many
passages about the coming Messiah with prophecies which have
been fulfilled by Jesus Christ. The Psalms in particular
refer numerous times to the Messiah. Jesus specifically
proclaimed that the Psalms spoke of Him. (Luke 24:44) “Then
He said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you
while I was still with you, that all things must be
fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the
Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” NKJV This lesson
will examine several prophecies from the Psalms about the
Messiah and how they were fulfilled by Christ.
Body:
I.
Psalm 2
·
Royal rejection of Messiah (Psalm 2:1-2) “Why
do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The
kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take
counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed,
saying,” NKJV (Acts 4:25-26) “who by the mouth of Your
servant David have said: Why did the nations rage, And the
people plot vain things? The kings of the earth took their
stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the
Lord and against His Christ.” NKJV
·
Would be called King (Psalm 2:6) “Yet I have
set My King On My holy hill of Zion.” (Matthew 27:37) “And
they put up over His head the accusation written against
Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
·
Declared the Son of God (Psalm 2:7) “I will
declare the decree, The Lord has said to Me, You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.” (Matthew 3:16-17) “When He had
been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and
behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the
Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
And suddenly a voice came from Heaven, saying, This is My
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Acts 13:33) “God
has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has
raised up Jesus, As it is also written in the Second Psalm:
You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” (Matthew 17:5)
“While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud
overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the
cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased. Hear Him!”
II.
Psalm 8
·
Messiah would be praised by little children
(Psalm 8:2) “Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That
You may silence the enemy and the avenger.” (Matthew
21:15-16) “But when the chief priests and scribes saw the
wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in
the temple and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David! They
were indignant and said to Him, Do You hear what these are
saying? And Jesus said to them, Yes, Have you never read,
Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have
perfected praise?”
III.
Psalm 22
·
Forsaken by God (Psalm 22:1) “My God, My God,
why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping
Me, And from the words of My groaning?” (Matthew 27:46) “And
about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice,
saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is, My God, My God,
why have You forsaken Me?”
·
Ridiculed and mocked (Psalm 22:7-8) “All
those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they
shake the head, saying, He trusted in the Lord, let Him
rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!”
(Luke 23:35) “And the people stood looking on. But even the
rulers with them sneered, saying, He saved others let Him
save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
·
Hand and feet pierced (Psalm 22:16) “For dogs
have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has
enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet;” (John
20:25-27) “The other disciples therefore said to him, We
have seen the Lord. So he said to them, Unless I see in His
hands the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side,
I will not believe. And after eight days His disciples were
again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors
being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace to you!
Then He said to Thomas, Reach your finger here, and look at
My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side.
Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
·
Would gamble for His clothes (Psalm 22:18)
“They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing
they cast lots.” (Luke 23:34) “Then Jesus said, Father
forgive them, for they do not know what they do. And they
divided His garments and cast lots.”
IV.
Psalm 24
·
Would ascend to heaven (Psalm 24:7-10) “Lift
up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you
everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in, Who
is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord
mighty in battle, Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up,
you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King
of glory.” (Mark 16:19) “So then, after the Lord had spoken
to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the
right hand of God.” (Luke 24:51) “Now it came to pass, while
He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up
into heaven.”
V.
Psalm 34
·
Bones would not be broken (Psalm 34:20) “He
guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken.” (John
19:33-36) “But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was
already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the
soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately
blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified,
and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling
the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were
done that the Scripture should be fulfilled. Not one of His
bones shall be broken.”
VI.
Psalm 35
·
Would be falsely accused (Psalm 35:11)
“Fierce witnesses rise up; They ask me things that I do not
know,” (Mark 14:57-58) “Then some rose up and bore false
witness against Him, saying, We heard Him say, I will
destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I
will build another made without hands.”
·
Would be hated without cause (Psalm 35:19)
“Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies;
Nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause.”
(John 15:24-25) “If I had not done among them the works
which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they
have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. But this
happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written
in their law, They hated Me without a cause.”
VII.
Psalm 45
·
His throne would be eternal (Psalm 45:6-7)
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of
righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You love
righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God,
has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your
companions.” (Luke 1:33) “And He will reign over the house
of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
(Hebrews 1:8-12) “But to the Son He says: Your throne, O
God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the
scepter of Your kingdom. You loved righteousness and hated
lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With
the oil of gladness more than Your companions. And: You
Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth. And
the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish,
but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment;
Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be
changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not
fail.”
VIII.
Psalm 41
·
Would be betrayed (Psalm 41:9) “Even my own
familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has
lifted up his heel against me.” (Luke 22:47-48) “And while
He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was
called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew
near to Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said to him, Judas, are
you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
IX.
Psalm 69
·
Given vinegar to drink (Psalm 69:21) “They
also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave
me vinegar to drink.” (Matthew 27:34) “they gave Him sour
wine mingled with gall to drink, But when He had tasted it,
He would not drink.” (John 19:28-30) “After this, Jesus,
knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the
Scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst! Now a vessel
full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a
sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His
mouth.”
X.
Psalm 109
·
Would pray for His enemies (Psalm 109:4) “In
return for my love they are my accusers, But I give myself
to prayer.” (Luke 23:34) “Then Jesus said, Father, forgive
them, for they do not know what they do. And they divided
His garments and cast lots.”
XI.
Psalm 110
·
Seated at God’s right hand (Psalm 110:1) “The
Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your
enemies Your footstool.” (Mark 16:19) “So then, after the
Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and
sat down at the right hand of God.” (Matthew 22:44) “The
Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your
enemies Your footstool.”
XII.
Psalm 118
·
The rejected cornerstone (Psalm 118:22) “The
stone which the builder rejected Has become the chief
cornerstone.” (Luke 20:17) “Then He looked at them and said,
What then is this that is written: The stone which the
builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone?” (Acts
4:11) “This is the stone which was rejected by you builders,
which has become the chief cornerstone.”
·
His triumphal entry (Psalm 118:26) “Blessed
is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We have blessed you
from the house of the Lord.” (Luke 19:38) “saying: Blessed
is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in
heaven and glory in the highest!”
Conclusion:
The Messiah would be resurrected. (Psalm
16:8-11) “I have set the Lord always before me; Because He
is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart
is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in
hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You
allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the
path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your
right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Matthew 28:2-7) “And
behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the
Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the
stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like
lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards
shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the
angel answered and said to the women, Do not be afraid, for
I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not
here; for He is risen, as He said, Come, see the place where
the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He
is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you
into Galilee; there you will see Him, Behold, I have told
you.”
