Read
Psalm 24.
These words of David assert that the God who created the
earth and owns everything on it is the same God into
whose presence the worshipper enters. This God is the
King of Glory! The apostle Paul, in I Corinthians 2:8;
refers to Jesus as the “Lord of Glory.” For such He is!
Jesus, the King of Glory, entered Jerusalem on a Sunday
nearly 2,000 years ago. It’s to that event we now turn our
attention.
Text:
Matthew 21:1-17
Body:
I.
The King Enters on a Donkey
(Verses
1-7)
·
Jerusalem is the city of the Great King. (Psalm
48:1-2)
It is the center of Jewish religious life and the place of
expectations of the Messiah.
·
Jesus, the King of Glory, is ready to enter the city. Jesus
showed the glory of God throughout His time on earth. (John
17:4-5)
This was seen in His miracles, His teachings, His responses
to His enemies, His determination to do the will of the
Father.
·
Followers of Jesus would do well in heeding the words
of
I Corinthians 10:31.
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do
all to the glory of God.”
(NKJV)
·
But the King of Glory was not going to enter Jerusalem
mounted on a great war horse leading a might army. He was
going to enter Jerusalem riding on a colt, the foal of a
donkey! This had been predicted centuries before by the
prophet Zechariah. (Zechariah
9:9,
also
Isaiah 62:11)
II.
The King Is Praised by the People
(Verses
8-11)
·
People spread their cloaks on the road, symbolizing their
submission to Him. (II
Kings 9:13)
·
Waving palm branches (John
12:13)
signified that Jesus was the King in the line of David and
would hopefully bring them victory over their enemies. (Psalm
118:25-26)
·
“Hosanna” “O Save” or “O Salvation”
·
Jesus certainly deserved the praises of the people. They
had seen His works, heard His teaching, and observed His
character. When people see Jesus as He truly is, they can’t
help but praise Him. (Psalm
67:1-5)
·
A day is coming when every knee shall bow and every tongue
shall confer that Jesus Christ is Lord. All will praise Him
to the glory of the Father. (Philippians
2:9-11)
But for most, it will be too late.
III.
The King Angers the Rulers
(Verses
14-17)
·
Not everyone who saw Jesus entering Jerusalem was happy
about it. Some of the religious leaders were angry and
showed their resentment to Jesus.
·
Jesus acknowledged the praise given Him and linked it to
Psalm 8.
Read
Psalm 8:1-2.
This psalm tells of God’s majesty and Christ applied this
psalm to Himself. He thus affirmed that He is the King of
Glory, the Divine Messiah. This no doubt infuriated the
religious leaders.
·
Jesus never backed down in the face of His enemies. He
never watered down His claims or diluted His demands of His
followers. (Matthew
10:35-39)
·
These chief priests and scribes were actually enemies of
God, wolves in sheep’s clothing. They were leading people
away from the King of Glory. (Matthew
23:13-15)
·
Anyone who wants to silence those who want to glorify God is
an enemy of God. Anyone who considers it unseemly or not
politically correct to praise God in the public square is
not worthy to be called a follower of Christ. Some might
want Christians to “tone it down a little” in our public
demonstrations of faithfulness. We should always remember
the words of
Matthew 10:32-33.
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also
confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever
denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father
who is in heaven.”
(NKJV)
Conclusion:
The King of Glory is standing at the door and knocking. It
is up to you, though, to let Him in.
