People throughout the ages have had many ideas of who
Jesus was. But by examining the Word of God, we can come to better
understand Him when we see the wide variety of names by which He is
called.
Body:
I.
The Son of God
·
The angel Gabriel appears to Mary and announces this
about the child she would bear. (Luke 1:35) “And the
angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also,
that Holy One which is to be born will be called the Son of God.’ ”
NKJV The writer of Hebrews affirms this as well.
(Hebrews 4:14) “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest
who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, Let us
hold fast our confession.” NKJV
·
John informs us of an additional detail concerning
Jesus sonship. (John 1:14, 18) “And the Word became flesh and
dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 18 No one has
seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of
the Father. He has declared Him.” NKJV Jesus is the “only
begotten” Son of God – the unique one. (John 3:16) “For
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting
life.” (Hebrews 1:5) “For to which of the angels did He
ever say: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You’? And again:
‘I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son’?” NKJV
Jesus is fully divine. (Colossians 1:19) “For it pleased
the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,” NKJV
II.
The Messiah
·
Listen to the words of Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
(John 1:41) “He first found his own brother Simon, and said to
him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated, the Christ).
NKJV Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One. This was
prophesied in Psalm 2:1-2. “Why do the nations rage, And the
people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves,
And rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His
Anointed. saying,” NKJV It was fulfilled by Jesus.
(Matthew 1:16) “And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of
whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.” (John 4:25-26)
“The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming’ (who is
called Christ). ‘When He comes, He will tell us all things.’ Jesus
said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He.’ ” NKJV
·
Jesus was appointed by God with a specific plan and
purpose.
III.
Immanuel
·
Jesus is also called Immanuel, which means “God with
us.” (Matthew 1:23) “Behold, the virgin shall be with child,
and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is
translated, God with us.” NKJV This had been prophesied by
Isaiah in Isaiah 7:14. “Therefore the Lord Himself will give
you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and
shall call His name Immanuel.” NKJV
·
Jesus was born on earth in human form and lived among
us, being tempted just like we are. (Hebrews 4:15) “For
we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our
weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without
sin.” NKJV (Hebrews 5:7-9) “who, in the days of His
flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with
vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death,
and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He
learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been
perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey
Him,” NKJV
·
Jesus continues to be with us. (Matthew
28:19-20) “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have
commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the
Age. Amen.” NKJV
IV.
King of Kings/Lord of Lords
·
Jesus is called this twice in Revelation.
(Revelation 17:14) “These will make war with the Lamb, and the
Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings;
and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”
(Revelation 19:16) “And He has on His robe and on His thigh a
name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” NKJV This
means He is King over all. (I Timothy 6:15) “which He
will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only
Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords,” NKJV
·
Micah prophesied about a ruler being born in
Bethlehem. (Micah 5:2) “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you
shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings
forth are from of old, From everlasting.” NKJV
·
Jesus is also Lord of all. (Acts 10:36)
“The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace
through Jesus Christ – He is Lord of all” - NKJV And Lord over
all. (Romans 10:12) “For there is no distinction between
Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call
upon Him.” NKJV
·
By His resurrection, He has become Lord of the dead
and the living. (Romans 14:9) “For to this end Christ
died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the
dead and the living.” NKJV
V.
Good Shepherd
·
Jesus describes Himself. (John 10:11) “I
am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His live for the
sheep.” NKJV This was prophesied by Ezekiel in Ezekiel 34:23.
“I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them –
My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd.” NKJV
·
The writer of Hebrews describes Jesus as the Great
Shepherd. (Hebrews 13:20) “Now may the God of peace who
brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the
sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,” NKJV
·
The Shepherd means He is the guardian of our souls.
(I Peter 2:25) “For you were like sheep going astray, but have
now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” NKJV
·
As the Chief Shepherd, He will give us a crown of
glory. (I Peter 5:4) “and when the Chief Shepherd
appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade
away.” NKJV
VI.
Lamb of God
·
Listen to how Jesus is described in John 1:29.
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold!
The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’ ” NKJV
He is depicted as the slain Lamb in Revelation 5:6, 9, 12)
“And I looked, and behold in the midst of the throne and of the four
living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as
though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which
are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.” “9
And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the
scroll, And to open its seals For You were slain, And have redeemed
us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and
nation,’ ” “12 Saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb
who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength
and honor and glory and blessing!’ ” NKJV
·
The blood of the Lamb has the power to redeem us – to
pay the penalty for our sins.
(I Peter 1:18-19) “knowing that you were not
redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your
aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with
the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and
without spot.” NKJV The Lamb becomes our ransom.
Conclusion:
The Bible reveals many other names of Jesus:
Almighty, Mediator, Prince of Peace. . . Each of us should
strive to call Him “Savior.”
