Jesus Betrayed and Denied

Jesus Betrayed and Denied

Background:

Jesus and the apostles were in the garden of Gethsemane. Being in agony and deep distress, repetitions three times, the father that, if there is any way possible, remove this cup of suffering or death. The answer: there is no other way. So with strong determination, he forges ahead with God's plan for man's redemption. He tells his disciples,” Rise, let us be going. See, he who betrays me is at hand.”

Theme:

To examine Judas betrayal and Peter's denial so as to help us never to betray or deny our savior.

Body:

1.  the betrayal in the garden:

primarily Matthew's account with additional information from the others.

Matthew 26:47, Judas comes with a detachment of troops, up to 600 men, along with the temple guard from the Sanhedrin. They bring weapons as well as lanterns and torches. They may have thought Jesus and his disciples would be hiding and they believed they would resist arrest

read John 18: 4-9. Jesus knew what his enemies were up to. He went forward, and wasn't hiding. He freely admits who he is and knows he is innocent. Judas freely chose to stand with Jesus’s enemies. Many fled probably in fear. Jesus didn't want his disciples taken. Read John 17: 12

verse 48- judas had previously made plans with them, Matthew 26: 14- 16.

Verse 49- greetings- rejoice. Jesus was betrayed with a kiss. This was the most shameful act in human history. It was a very demonstrative kiss.

Verse 50- friend, comrade, companion-Jesus said this perhaps to remind Judas of their past and how terrible his betrayal really was.

Verse 51 even the apostles only had two swords among them. Peter having a sword, shows his impetuous nature. He is ready to die for the lord as he said he would. He attacks a company of roman soldiers. He had no chance of winning. He was not afraid at this time period he meant to kill Malcus. Luke records that Jesus reattached his ear.

Verse 52- the cause of Christ is never advanced by physical force. Nor is it advanced in any way except through proclamation of the gospel. The truth sets us free, nothing else does.

Verse 53- if a show of force could help, Jesus says that he could call down an angelic army numbering in 10s of thousands.

Verse 54- it was God's purpose he be arrested and killed.  Fulfilled Old Testament prophecies, psalms 22, Isaiah 53: 4-5.

Verse 55-HE rebukes them for arresting him at night as a robber. He has been teaching in the temple in broad daylight. They were too cowardly to arrest him then period now read Luke 22: 53. Satan was as happy as the Jewish rulers. This was their hour period it would prove to be a short lived though.

Verse 56- disciples all flee, just as predicted by Zechariah 13: 7. Judas had heard all of Jesus sermons, witnessed many miracles, been Privy to personal talks with the son of God and witnessed first hand the life of the only sinless human that ever lived. Yet sold him out for the price of a wounded slave.

2.  What have we sold him out for?

·  Do we forsake meeting with his people in order to get ready for work the next day, that's selling Jesus out cheap. Jesus wants us here.

·  Do we give back to the offering each Sunday a small amount compared to how much we make each week? Are we selling our savior for a few dollars?

·  Do we place a higher priority on sports and recreation and we do on Lords work? How much time and money do we spend on these compared to how much we devote to the Lord's work? Are we selling out our savior?

·  Are we not selling him out when we fail to study the scriptures and learn how to live acceptably in his sight?

3.  What happened to Judas? Matthew 27: 3-10.

·  Judas could have repented, but instead he only regretted what he had done. Do we not sometimes do exactly the same thing?  We may report our sins and even regret him, but really have no intention of truly repenting of them?

·  Acts 1: 16-18, 25, Judas is in that part of the Hadean world called torments, with suffering unbearably night and day for his acts of betrayal. For his selling out the very son of God.

4.  Invitation:

·  is that the end you really want? To spend an eternity with Judas and those who have betrayed their savior. As long as life is within you, there is time to make changes.
