The Supremacy of Christ
C.S. Lewis portrayed the Christian’s experience in The Chronicles of
Narnia.
Lucy rushes to Aslan – Christ – and embraces him.
“Welcome, child,” he says.
“Aslan.” Lucy says, “You’re bigger.”
“That is because you are older, little one,” he answers.
“Not because you are?” she responds.
“I am not. But every year you grow, you
will find me bigger.”
“Expanding souls encounter an expanding
Christ.” R. Hughes
The book of Hebrews will help us grow
and find a bigger Christ.
Hebrews One
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to
the fathers by the prophets,
(Hebrews 1:1)
Then they used many different methods to communicate their message.
In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God.
(John 1:1)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of
grace and truth.
(John 1:14)
No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in
the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
(John1:18)
Aslan to Lucy, “But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”
Cosmic Supremacy
2
has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom
He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the
worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory
and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the
word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down
at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
(Hebrews 1:2-3)
·
Inheritor:
Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth
for Your possession.
(Psalms 2:8)
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are
on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or
principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and
for Him.
(Colossians 1:16)
Also, we are His inheritance.
the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know
what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of
His inheritance in the saints,
(Ephesians 1:18)
And His
treasures.
21
Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are
yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or
the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all
are yours. 23 And you are Christ’s, and Christ is
God’s.
(1
Corinthians 3:21-23)
Creator: of space and time, sub-microscopic particles, and galaxies.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made
that was made.
(John 1:3)
yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and
we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things,
and through whom we live.
(1 Corinthians 8:6)
Also new creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things
have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
(2 Corinthians 5:17)
·
Sustainer:
He upholds the universe. He is the spoken word.
And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
(Colossians 1:17)
He
sustains Christians.
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as
being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God,
(2 Corinthians 3:5)
·
Radiator:
not a reflector on the Mount of Transfiguration.
His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no
launderer on earth can whiten them.
(Mark 9:3)
Note also Paul on the road to Damascus.
As he journeyed, he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone
around him from heaven.
(Acts 9:3)
“Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about
noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me.
(Acts 22:6)
The Word was God.
·
Representor:
“exact imprint” The image on a coin perfectly corresponds to the
die. Jesus corresponds exactly with the Father but is also distinct
from Him. The Son is the ultimate communication of the Father, the
revealer of Him.
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long,
and yet you have not known Me, Philip?
He who has seen Me has seen the
Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
(John 14:9)
Priestly Supremacy
·
Purifier:
He made purification for sin. The shedding of blood was necessary.
And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood,
and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
(Ephesians 1:17)
He washed us from our sins in His own
blood.
and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the
dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.
(Revelation 1:5)
·
Ruler:
The Levitical priests never sat down because they were never done.
But Jesus, being a High Priest after the order of Melchizedek, sat
down.
11
And every priest stands ministering daily and
offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away
sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one
sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,
(Hebrews 10:11-12)
The right hand is the place of highest
honor.
9
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given
Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at
the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of
those on earth, and of those under the earth,
(Philippians 2:9-10)
How wonderful is the thought that while
there, He is interceding for us.
Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who
died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand
of God, who also makes intercession for us.
(Romans
8:34)
Do
you know God’s Son? He is the author of eternal salvation to all
those who obey Him.
