Text: Matthew 25:1-13
1
“Then the kingdom of heaven
shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to
meet
the
bridegroom.
2
Now five of them were wise, and five were
foolish.
3
Those who were foolish took their lamps and
took no oil with them,
4
but the wise took oil in their vessels with
their lamps.
5
But while the bridegroom was delayed,
they all slumbered and slept.
6 “And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is
coming; go out to meet him!’
7
Then all those virgins arose and
trimmed their
lamps.
8
And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us
some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’
9
But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest
there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who
sell, and buy for yourselves.’
10
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom
came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and
the door was shut.
11
“Afterward the other virgins came also, saying,
‘Lord, Lord,
open to us!’
12
But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to
you,
I do not know you.’
13 “Watch
therefore, for you
know neither
the day nor the hour
in which the Son of Man is coming.

The Olivet Discourse is found in Matthew 24
and 25.

nation and General Judgement at Christ’s return.
Jesus Is
Coming Again
·
Sudden and unexpected. Life
will be going on as normal.
36
“But of that day and hour no one knows,
not even the angels of
heaven,
but My Father only.
37 But as the days of Noah were, so
also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
38 For as in the days before the
flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,
until the day that Noah entered the ark,
39 and did not know until the
flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of
Man be. 40
Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken
and the other left. 41
Two women will be grinding at the mill: one
will be taken and the other left. 42
Watch therefore, for you do not know what
hour your Lord is coming.
43 But know this, that if the
master of the house had known what
hour the thief would come, he would have watched and
not allowed his house to be broken into.
44
Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you
do not expect.
(Matthew 24:36-44)
·
A time of separation.
31
“When the Son of Man comes in His
glory, and all the
holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
32 All the nations will be
gathered before Him, and He
will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep
from the goats.
(Matthew 25:31-32)
Only Two
Types of People
·
“Wise” and “Foolish”
24
“Therefore whoever
hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise
man who built his house on the rock 25
and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house;
and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and
does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the
sand: 27
and the rain descended, the floods
came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great
was its fall.”
28 And so it was,
when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at
His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having
authority, and not as the scribes.
(Matthew 7:24-29)
Some make preparation for the next life, and
some do not.
Each Person is Responsible for Themselves
8
And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us
some of your oil, for our
lamps are going out.’ 9
But the wise
answered, saying, ‘No, lest
there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who
sell, and buy for yourselves.’
(Matthew 25:8-9)
·
“Give us” No one can obey the
gospel for you, no one can worship for you, no one can serve for you, no
one can practice pure, undefiled religion for you.
12
So then each of us shall give account of
himself to God. (Romans 14:12)
One Day The Door Will Be Shut
10
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and
those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and
the door was shut.
11
“Afterward the other virgins came also, saying,
‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’
12 But he answered and said,
‘Assuredly, I say to you,
I do not know you.’
·
When a man dies. When Christ returns.
·
When the door is shut, it is shut forever.
If you are left outside, there is no chance to ever get in!
On Judgement Day,
one will either be allowed entrance into the heavenly home or left out
to spend eternity with the devil and all the wicked.
14 Blessed are those who
do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life,
and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 But
outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and
idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
