Sunday AM Sermon |
A Godly Mother
Introduction:
A
junior high school science teacher discussed magnets and their
properties. The next day he gave a quiz with this question. “My
name begins with an ‘M,’ has six letters, and I pick up things.
What am I?” Over half of the class replied,
“Mother!”
Discuss: “The hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world.”
Body:
I. The Influence
of a Godly Mother
-
Godly mothers can
instill an authentic faith in their children. (II
Timothy 1:5)
Faith is not inherited. It must be learned. Eunice’s faith was
real and genuine. Mothers need to demonstrate their faith by
reading the Bible, worshipping, teaching others. A mother must
be more interested in her children’s souls than in their
clothes; more concerned about their eternal life than their
success in life; more interested in their relationship with
Jesus that their popularity; more concerned with their standing
before God than their social status; their spirituality than
their intellectual or athletic accomplishments.
-
Godly mothers can
instill a respect for the Scripture in their children. (II
Timothy 3:14-15)
Eunice taught Timothy the Word from the time he was a baby. She
was following the advice given in
Deuteronomy
6:4-7. The
influence of a godly mother cannot be overemphasized.
II. The Work of a
Godly Mother
-
Titus 2:1-5
All Christians should speak what is fitting for sound doctrine
and adorn the doctrine of God. (Titus
2:10)
“The
godly mother puts on the lipstick of a kind tongue, blush of
purity and innocence, foundation of godliness, eyeliner of
compassion, and mascara of sincerity.” Unknown
-
Older women should
teach younger women how to be good wives and mothers. (Titus
2:3-5)
Teach what it takes to be a wife and mother; what proper
behavior is. They must teach them to love their husband and
children. Note the end of
Verse 5:
When the home is not what it should be, the Word of God is
blasphemed, dishonored.
-
Proverbs 31
-
A good manager
of the home (Verses
15, 21, 27)
-
Not lazy (Verses
17-19)
III. Examples of
Godly Mothers
-
Jochebed (Exodus
2:1-10)
(yaw – keh – bed) Moses’ mother protected her son from evil.
She entrusted him to God.
-
Hannah (I
Samuel 1:11, 28)
Samuel’s mother
-
Sarah (I
Peter 3:1-6)
Conclusion:
Godly mothers should be honored. (Proverbs
31:28)
