We’re Not in Kansas Anymore – Part 2
Introduction:
Summarize:
We’re Not in Kansas Anymore – Part 1 (July 29, 2012)
Text:
Acts
17: 22-25
II. A
Knowledge of the Culture (Verses
22-23)
-
Paul
acknowledges their religious devotion. He was tactful,
courteous and respectful; not condescending or self-righteous.
-
He
“carefully examined” their objects of worship. We must
research and study what people believe. [World religions:
Islam, Buddhism, etc. Christian denominations and/or sects]
-
He uses
“their objects of worship” as a place to transition to the only
true one worthy of worship, Jesus. (John
4:19-21)
-
Altar to
the “Unknown God” Paul proclaims who the true God is. Note:
Acts 18:24-26
III. A
Commitment to the Truth (Verses
24-29)
-
Paul
started where they were spiritually. They believed in supreme
beings, but didn’t know the true God. Note: We also must start
where people are. We must not assume they know anything about
our faith.
-
Verse 24
– God is the Creator of the Universe (Isaiah
42:5)
Christians must be committed to this belief. Paul used similar
language at Lystra. (Acts
14:11-15)
“Lord of heaven and earth,” Jehovah is the true God. (Deuteronomy
10:14)
He is superior to all so-called gods and deities. (Psalms
115:2-8)
God does not live in temples. It is easy to imagine Paul
pointing to the Parthenon and exclaiming that the true God does
not live in man-made temples! Note: Paul does not water down
the truth due to the situation.
