Philip the Personal Worker
Introduction:
How can I teach my neighbor about Christ? What should I say to my
friend about salvation? These are important and vital questions for
which we need to find an answer. Philip is an excellent example of
how to approach and teach people the truth of the gospel. Read
Acts 8:4-8.
Philip had success in preaching the word in Samaria. But God called
him away to teach one honest soul about the Lord. (Acts
8:26-27) From
this encounter we can learn many things about our own efforts at
teaching the lost.
Body:
I.
The Importance of Our Attitude
-
“A Willingness to
Obey”
When God spoke, Philip obeyed. Philip “got up and went”; he
obeyed without question. He may have thought it was a strange
request, but he knew God’s way was best. Today we must be
willing to obey. We have been given our marching orders.
(Mark
16:15)
-
“A Willingness to
Teach One-on-One”
Nothing beats the personal touch. Philip was willing to travel
about fifty miles for one lost soul. (Luke
15:1-7)
-
“A Willingness to
Teach Any and All”
Philip was willing to teach someone very different from
himself. The eunuch came from a different background and
culture. We need to be color-blind in our evangelism. Consider
a person’s soul, not the size of his pocketbook. (James
2:1) Don’t
be a respecter of persons. (Acts
10:34-35)
-
“A Willingness to
Go Now”
Philip “ran to
him.” (Acts
8:30) There
was a sense of urgency about him. There was no time to
waste. (II
Corinthians 6:2,
Romans
13:11-12,
II
Thessalonians 3:1)
II.
The Importance of Our Actions
-
Ask Questions
(Acts
8:30)
This shows that you are concerned for them. It also creates
more opportunities for discussion.
-
Know and Use the
Bible
(Acts
8:31-35)
You must know God’s Word to teach it to others. (Hebrews
5:11-14)
You don’t have to know everything, though.
-
Teach Jesus
(Acts
8:35)
Don’t teach opinions, traditions, feelings . . . These cannot
save; only Jesus can. (Acts
4:12)
-
Always Look for
More Opportunities
(Acts
8:40)
Philip went preaching to others. We must continue to cast
our nets wide. (Matthew
28:19-20)
Conclusion:
Read
Proverbs 11:30.
