Set Up Our Banners

Introduction:

The title for this lesson comes from Psalms 20, a psalm attributed to David.  He was a great warrior for Israel and this psalm has a definite military beat to it.  This psalm describes David’s heart before going into battle.  Every morning we go into battle as well.

Text:  Psalms 20:1-7

Body:

I.   Prayers Are Offered   (Verses 1-5

  • The Lord is asked to defend Israel.   (Verse 1)   Note similar words from Jacob in Genesis 35:3.  His name is sought for protection.  The righteous rely upon Him for security.  (Proverbs 18:10)
  • Help is requested to support David throughout the battle.   (Verse 2)  Sanctuary was in Jehovah’s presence.  God would go with him.
  • Offerings and sacrifices are David’s worship rendered to Israel’s Protector.  (Verse 3)   (I Samuel 7:7-10)
  • God is asked to fulfill Israel’s plans.  (Verse 4)  (Psalms 21:1-2)
  • Salvation and victory are from God.  The military banners will wave high.  (Verse 5)  The banner serves as a rallying point.

II.   A Declaration Is Given   (Verse 6

  • God responds in a positive way to the prayers.  Deliverance will be granted and comes from “holy heaven,” God’s dwelling place.
  • Psalms 28:6-8   “The anointed,” are God’s people.
  • Psalms 140:7   God is David’s figurative helmet.

III.   Praise Is Expressed   (Verses 7-9

  • Those who do not know God place their trust in the wrong objects.  Chariots and horses were the most powerful military resources in Near Eastern warfare.  Israel’s kings were prohibited from accumulating large numbers of horses.  (Deuteronomy; 17:16)      This kept the king from depending upon them and not Jehovah.   (Deuteronomy 20:1-4, Psalms 33:16-17)
  • God’s enemies, who were standing in their arrogance, would collapse and fall.  But God’s people, who are bowing down to worship, would stand upright in victory.  (Isaiah 31:1-3,         Jeremiah 9:23-24)
  • Jehovah is recognized and praised as the Saving Lord.          (Psalms 48:1-2)

Conclusion:

There is a battle going on right now, a battle between right and wrong, good and evil.  Will we march under the banner of the Lord and fight against enemies of God?  We must battle against religious error of all kinds.  It has to be challenged.  Well we be fearful or faithful?
