What Do You Think about God?
Introduction:
Most of us know we are to love God and
glorify His name. But do you ever find it difficult to love God as you
should? Maybe you just need a reminder of who God really is.
“What comes into our minds when we
think about God is the most important thing about us. Worship is pure
or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God. For
this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God
Himself, and this most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a
given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to
be like.” A. W. Tozer
So what is Jehovah like? What are His
attributes? Let’s go to the Bible to find out.
Body:
I.
God Is Holy
·
I Samuel 2:2 “There is none holy like the
Lord”. . . To say God is holy is to say that He is set
apart, distinct from us.
·
Holiness is said to “befit His house.” (Psalm
93:5)
·
For the Jews, saying something three times
demonstrated its perfection. (Isaiah 6:1-3) There is
nothing or no one with whom to compare His holiness. He is
perfectly set apart.
II.
God Is Eternal
·
Read Psalm 90:1-4. “From everlasting to
everlasting.”
·
Everything and everyone had a beginning,
except God! He exists outside time, but we exist within
it. We cannot grasp an eternal God.
·
The Lord is the “Alpha and the Omega.”
(Revelation 1:8)
·
Read I Timothy 1:17. “Now to the King eternal
immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and
glory forever and ever. Amen.” NKJV
·
So time does not limit God or change Him in
any way.
·
His eternal nature is past our finding out.
(Job 36:26) God’s own being does not consist of a
succession of moments as do ours.
III.
God Is All-Knowing
·
Rather intimidating, isn’t it? We cannot fool
God! He knows us better than we know ourselves. (Hebrews
4:13)
·
He knows our actions before we commit them.
(Job 34:21, Job 31:4) He sees everything. (Psalm 33:13-15)
·
He even knows our thoughts. “Behold, I know
your thoughts. . .” (Job 21:27) Also see Jesus’ words in
Revelation 2:23.
·
Our God cares so much for us that He knows
even the tiniest details of our lives – even the number of
hairs on out head!
IV.
God Is All-Powerful
·
Read Colossians 1:16. “For by Him all things
were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or
principalities or powers. All things were created through
Him and for Him.” Sometimes we act as if He is there to do
our bidding.
·
Psalm 115:3 informs us – “Our God is in the
heavens; He does all that He pleases.” Answers to certain
questions we just cannot know. It is beyond our
comprehension. (Job 26:14)
·
His power is seen in the universe. (Jeremiah
10:11-13)
V.
God Is Fair and Just
·
Psalm 25:8 teaches that God is both fair and
just – good and upright. He’s impartial. He hates when
people are treated badly or unfairly. He hates any
mistreatment of others.
·
Moses observed this. (Deuteronomy 32:4) Note
also Revelation 15:3.
·
God is totally just and fair when He judges and
punishes sin. He will administer justice in accordance with
His standards. He cannot excuse sin. (Psalm 7:10-13)
·
A day of judgment is coming. (II Corinthians
5:10) This will be totally fair and just.
Conclusion:
Hopefully this has been a good reminder of who God is; each attribute is
crucial to our understanding of God’s character. Also this reminder
will motivate us to love God even more.
