The
Names Of God Names Of God
Part 3
Recall that Yahweh
is the personal name of God. It means to be, or exist. Recall what
he said to Moses in the burning Bush. I am that i am, exodus 3: 14,
the eternal one – uncaused, John 8: 54-58.
This is the name
used when God is making a covenant- Noah, Abraham, moses.
The name Yahweh.
Each reveals something special about Jehovah.

A name in the Hebrew language helps to know much about that
person, the qualities and the nature. It is very important
in understanding the concept of God. Read
Exodus 9:16.
“But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I
may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared
in all the earth.”
NKJV
I.
Elohim
II.
YHWH
Psalm 19:14
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be
acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my
Redeemer.” NKJV
Lord (Jehovah) What does the Lord mean to you? Is He truly
your Lord?

Philippians 4:19
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by
Christ Jesus.”
NKJV
Many examples throughout the Scriptures show us that God provides. Ours
today is of a poor widow who was in dire straits. She lived in a world much
like ours; one in which it was tough to be a believer and at times, hard to
make ends meet.
Text:
II Kings 4:1-7
Body:
I.
The Need of the Widow
II Kings 4:1-2
“A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to
Elisha, saying, ‘Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your
servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to
be his slaves.’ So Elisha said to her, ‘What shall I do for you? Tell me,
what do you have in the house?’ And she said, ‘Your maidservant has nothing
in the house but a jar of oil.’ ”
NKJV
II.
Elisha’s Response to the Widow
II Kings 4:3-4
“Then he said, ‘Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors
– empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you
shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those
vessels, and set aside the full ones.’ ”
NKJV
III.
God Takes Care of the Widow
II Kings 4:5-7
“So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought
the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the
vessels were full, that she said to her son, ‘Bring me another vessel.’ And
he said to her, ‘There is not another vessel.’ So the oil ceased.”
NKJV
Conclusion:
The greatest need all of us have is forgiveness. It first comes when we
have our sins washed away in baptism; then as we repent and ask God to
forgive us.

Many say “the God of the Old Testament is not the God
of the New Testament.” Did God change His nature or character?
Text:
Romans 11:22 “Therefore consider the goodness and severity of
God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you
continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.” NKJV
Body:

A.
Good in the Old Testament
B.

B.
Severity in the New Testament
Conclusion:
God has never changed His nature or character. He is
the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

In our busy day-to-day lives, we can get so caught up in the things
of this world that we forget to focus on our wonderful God.
Distractions come from all directions: job, family, house, sports,
entertainment, friends. . . But we must take time to think about
God and who He is. This lesson is a basic reminder of what our God
is like.

Most of us know we are to love God and
glorify His name. But do you ever find it difficult to love God as you
should? Maybe you just need a reminder of who God really is.
“What comes into our minds when we
think about God is the most important thing about us. Worship is pure
or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God. For
this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God
Himself, and this most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a
given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to
be like.” A. W. Tozer
So what is Jehovah like? What are His
attributes? Let’s go to the Bible to find out.
Body:
I.
God Is Holy
II.
God Is Eternal
III.
God Is All-Knowing
IV.
God Is All-Powerful
V.
God Is Fair and Just
Conclusion:
Hopefully this has been a good reminder of who God is; each attribute is
crucial to our understanding of God’s character. Also this reminder
will motivate us to love God even more.

The subject of God’s justice is not an
enjoyable one; it’s not supposed to be. To consider the justice of
God demands that we consider eternal punishment, because one implies
the other. Justice implies a standard by which men’s actions are
judged. A standard implies the existence of one who gave the
standard. Therefore all of us must be accountable to the authority
behind the standard.
Theme:
God is just in punishing men eternally.
Body:
I.
Nature of God
1.
God of Mercy (Psalm
86:15)
“But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious,
Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.”
NKJV
“Abundant in”
Full of compassion
2.
God of Love (I
John 4:8)
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
NKJV
but also
3.
God of Holiness (Leviticus
19:2)
“Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to
them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.’ ”
NKJV
“I the Lord
your God am holy.”
4.
God of Justice (Deuteronomy
32:4)
“He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A
God of Truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.”
NKJV
Lawful and
right; fitting
II.
God’s Righteous Judgment
Conclusion:
(Romans 3:23-26)
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being
justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in
Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His
blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because
in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were
previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His
righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the
one who has faith in Jesus.”
NKJV
We are all sinners and that is what is
wrong with the world.

Throughout the ages, kings, rulers, and presidents
have enforced the strictest conditions and requirements for those
wanting admittance to their presence. Jehovah, the Supreme Ruler,
has set down conditions for coming to His presence as well. The
writer of
Hebrews
10:22 gives the conditions for those of us who wish to draw near
to Jehovah.
Text:
Hebrews 10:22
“let us draw near with a true heart
in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil
conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” NKJV
I.
A True Heart
II.
An Assured Faith
III.
A Clean Conscience
Conclusion:
For us to approach God, we must possess a true heart,
an assured faith, and a clean conscience. Then we can serve the
living God with confidence. (Hebrews
10:19-22) “Therefore, brethren, having boldness to
enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way
which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near
with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts
sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure
water.” NKJV

Moses had been on Mount Sinai
for forty days. The people decided to build a golden calf to
worship. Moses came down, saw this, and broke the two tablets of
stone. Three thousand Israelites were killed because of their
idolatry. God told Moses that He was not going to be in their midst
anymore. This is further seen by a tent being set up outside the
camp where Moses would go to speak to Jehovah. Moses’ relationship
with God was not affected by the people’s rebellion. Read
Exodus 33:11.
But Moses desired a closer relationship with God. Read
Exodus 33:12-13.
He wanted to know Him more personally. Read
Exodus 33:17-23.
“Please, show me Your glory.” God responded, not by giving Moses a
vision of how Jehovah appears, but rather by describing Himself to
Moses; His nature.
Body:
God’s Self-Revelation
Read
Exodus 34:1-9.
This is probably one of the most important texts in all of the Old
Testament. Jehovah reveals Himself as He really is.

Invitation:
Notice Moses’ response. He made haste to worship. He prayed for
pardon. When we realize who God is, we will do the same!

Those who have had the privilege of growing up listening to the
great accounts of God’s creation are truly blessed. The power to
command material things to come into existence out of nothing is
beyond our ability to fully grasp. We do indeed worship an awesome
God!
But the physical material of our world is not the only “stuff” He
has created. The Bible speaks of other created things and it is to
these we turn our attention.
Body:

The Material of the Universe
II.
Life
III.
Eternal Spirit
IV.
Spiritual Creation
Conclusion:
We have a wonderful Creator! He has made it possible for us to live
with Him forever in Heaven.

Why is this question important? It is important because your view of
who God is shapes your view of yourself and how you should live in this
world. The source of our information about God must be His revealed
Word. So who is God?
Body:
I.
The Creator·
II.
The Heavenly Father
III.
The Savior
Conclusion:
Let us always remember that God loves us and will never forsake us.

Both the Old and New Testaments tell us of God’s wrath, His
divine anger, “flaring nostrils.” This anger is based upon His
justice and holiness. (Deuteronomy
4:25-26) One
primary purpose of His anger is to get His people to turn from their
evil ways and come back to Him. (Deuteronomy
13:16-18)
Scripture informs us that Jehovah is a consuming fire who will
ultimately destroy all who are opposed to His holiness. Because He
is also a jealous God, He demands our complete commitment to Him.
Body:
I.
A Jealous God
(Exodus
34:14)
II.
A Consuming Fire
(Psalms
97:1-5)
III.
The Fear of the Lord
(Matthew
10:26-28)
Conclusion:
Read
Deuteronomy 10:12-13.
