Commands all men Acts 17: 30-31

Introduction:  God has placed in our world physical laws that all men are subject to. Law of gravity, every single person is subject to gravity whether they believe in it or not. But this also applies to the spiritual world as well. All people are subject to our lord's commandments whether they believe them or not.

The text for today's lesson reinforces this principle. It forms part of the apostle Paul’s sermon on Mars hill in Athens. As you recall, when Paul enters this city, he discovers that all these people are religious, they are ignorant of Jehovah God.

Text: Acts 17: 30-31

Body:

1.   Times God overlooked. Passed over-Romans 3: 25-26. See also Acts 14: 15-17.

All must repent.

a.   All people are called to repent of their idolatry, wickedness, lawlessness. 1 John 3: 4.

b.   Lukes’s account of the Great Commission- Luke 24: 47.

c.   God's grace has appeared to all men- Titus 2: 11. Ignorance is not an excuse 2nd Thessalonians 1: 8.

d.   Repent- a change in one's mind which results in a change in one's life. Acts 26: 20; Luke 3: 8. A lack of repentance leads to death. 2 Peter 3:9.

A day of judgment.

e.   Appointed-God has determined the day- it won't be due to nuclear war, global warming, or an asteroid hitting the earth. 2 Peter 3: 10.

f.   Man cannot predict this day- Matthew 24: 36. Many have tried and failed.

The reason to repent.

g.    Because of the certainty of judgment- Hebrews 9: 27; 2 Corinthians 5: 10.

h.   This judgment is based upon what we have done in this life- personally. Matthew 25: 31-46. Read verse 45.

According to righteousness

i.    See revelation 19: 11. In righteousness He judges. The Lord judgments are always right- psalm 19:9.

j.    Man's judgments are many times wrong- due to misinformation, vices, bribery, illogical reasoning. But God's will is perfect- 1 peter 2: 23.

The Man He has ordained.

k.    Acts 10: 42. Ordained by god to judge. 2nd Corinthians 5: 10 calls it the judgment seat of Christ.

l.    All judgment has been committed to the son. John 5: 22, 27.

The assurance of the resurrection

m.   Reprove and guarantee that Christ will judge the world is the fact of his resurrection. There were hundreds of eyewitnesses. 1st Corinthians 15.

n.   His resurrection declared him to be the son of God. Romans 1: 4-5.

Conclusion

o.   Read Acts 17: 32-33.  The Lord commands all people to repent because there will be a day of judgment. How will you respond?
