Names Of God IV
God reveals
Himself through his names
Introduction: It is
important for us to study God's names. Through this, we come to know
him more intimately. “Hallow his name” means to regard with complete
devotion and admiration (Leviticus 22: 32).
Body
1.
He is almighty God
·
“El Shaddai” or just “Shaddai”
is one of the names of God in Judaism. El Shaddai is
conventionally translated into English as God Almighty.
·
Possessing all power, all
sufficiency. God, the mountain, strong, unchanging.
·
First found in genesis 17;1-2.
Stresses that God has the power necessary to fulfill his promises.
“Make of him a great nation!” Isaac, Jacob, and joseph all knew
him by that name.
·
Job Christ almighty God several
times to describe Jehovah, job 32: 4; 32: 8.
·
Matthew 19: 26,”… With man, this
is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Also,
Ephesians 3: 20
·
promises - Matthew 11: 28.

He is God most high
·
The most high; The highest- used
21 times in the old testament. No one is higher or even could be
higher.
·
Genesis 14: 18-20, also Hebrews
7: 1-2.
·
King of Babylon’s
pride/arrogance Isaiah 14: 13- 15
·
this name stresses his rule and
sovereignty-psalms 47: 2; 93: 18
·
majesty and preeminence- psalms
57: 2, psalms 78: 35.
·
David's prayer- 1 chronicles 29:
10-13.

He is holy God
·
Holy means to be set apart from
all that's evil; grounded in God's nature. Isaiah 8:16, “But the
Lord of hosts is exalted in justice, and the holy God shows himself
holy in righteousness.” Isaiah 29: 18-19
·
Note Isaiah 6: 1-3 – “the
holiest.” What did God choose us (Christians) to be? “… Holy and
without blame… (Ephesians 1: 4).
·
Read 1 Peter 1: 15-16. Called
us to holiness in 1 Thessalonians 4: 7.
4.
God of Truth
·
Moses describes God like this:
Deuteronomy 32: 4, faithfulness – truth. Also accurate, just,
integrity.
·
The psalmist proclaims, Psalms
31:5
·
Isaiah in Isaiah 65: 16.
·
Hebrew language - firmness and
certainty, truth, faithfulness.
·
Something that is absolute,
certain; Also not concealed, but disclosed; The real thing.
·
Helps us understand who God is.
He never changes and he is absolutely dependable.
5.
Let us remember that in Genesis 16 13,
the heavenly father is called ”El roe EE” - the God who sees, the
god who watches over me. He numbers the hairs on our heads and
knows all the circumstances of our lives. (2 Chronicles 16: 9;
Psalms 121: 3, 5-8)
