Today is the father of tomorrow. What we are today is the result of what we
have been thinking and the way we have lived in the past. The nation of
Israel had to learn this in a very personal way, Judges 2: 1-4. They failed
to follow God's instructions and suffered the consequences. The Lord gives
principles in scripture which serve as both warnings and encouragements,
Galatians 6:7. This law is true in every area of life. When God created this
world, he made it to operate according to certain rules, Genesis 8: 22.
While this verse discusses agriculture, this law applies universally.
Body
1. An example of sowing and reaping
a. Judah had the seeds of rebellion against Jehovah. Jeremiah 2: 8-8.
b. Note the consequences, Jeremiah 2: 9-13.
c. His law is stated in Jeremiah 12: 13-17.
2. Sow iniquity, reap vanity, proverbs 22:8.
a. When a person pursues a life of evil and sinful behavior, he is
sowing iniquity. Sadly, many only think about the here and now and do not
consider the consequences. Proverbs 13:15, Proverbs 11:18, 19, Romans 6:23.
b. Reap vanity, without purpose, useless, a waste. Remember the wise
man's words, Ecclesiastes 12:13.
3. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind, Hosea 8:7.
a. The nation of Israel, Hosea 8:1.
b. They worshipped false gods, Hosea 8: 3-6.
c. Because they chose to forsake God, God was going to forsake them.
Severe consequences would result.
a. The prophet Hosea had admonished God's people to change their ways.
If they sowed the right kind of seed, righteousness, they could reap the
blessings of God's kindness. The New Testament stresses the necessity of
obeying the Lord and living in accordance with his righteousness. Romans 6:
13, Hebrews 5: 9, Revelation 22: 14
a. The context for this is the giving Christians were to do on the
first day of the week, 1 Corinthians 16: 1-2. The giving was to be done
with the right spirit. 2 Corinthians 9: 7. The more that was given, the
more good could be accomplished.
6. Sow to the spirit, reap eternal life, Galatians 6: 8.
a. To focus solely on material things, things of the world, is to reap
corruption. Things that will ultimately perish. But if we focus on spiritual
things and follow the spirit's word, we will obtain eternal life, Romans 8:
6.
7. Conclusion
a. The truth is very simple: reap what we sow. The choices we make have
consequences. Remember these words, payday someday, 2 Corinthians 5: 10.
